Public sector workers gather for protest
11/11/2009 - 14:01:56

Frontline public sector workers are gathering in Dublin this afternoon to protest over proposed cuts in public sector pay.

Around 1,000 nurses, gardaí, prison officers and members of the fire and ambulance services have come together at Parnell Square.

They are due to march through the city to Leinster House where they will hand in a letter to the Finance Minister outlining their grievances.

Organisers say today's protest will not affect services as all those taking part are off-duty.

The Environment Minister John Gormley says the Government's plan to cut public sector pay by €1.3bn remains on the table.

Public sector unions are also warning that a 24-hour strike - planned for November 24 - is now inevitable.
