Liverpool chief rules out star player sales

Liverpool managing director Christian Purslow has moved to assure fans the Anfield club will not be forced to sell their star players over the summer.

An early exit from the Champions League, and the real possibility of missing out on a place in next season’s competition, are set to hit Liverpool’s finances hard.

That has led to speculation the Reds could listen to offers for the likes of Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres at the end of the campaign.

However Purslow insists those rumours are far wide of the mark.

“Nothing could be further from the truth than reports which suggested the club would choose to sell its star footballers. Full stop,” he told the Sun.

“The idea that we would ever wish to sell our top players is completely against the interests of this club.

“In fact our key priority since the summer has been to secure our senior players on long term improved contracts.

“We remain of the view that our starting 11 compares with anybody in the Premier League.

“Our plan is to try and improve the team, not to be so stupid as to reduce the quality of our squad.”
