Stephen Ireland’s father Michael has confirmed that the Manchester City midfielder will meet with Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni in the very near future.

Ireland Snr revealed that he watched Ireland’s 1-1 draw with Bulgaria in his son’s company and suggested that a return to international duty might not be too far away for his son.

“Giovanni and Stephen have spoken by phone and will sit down some time in the next few weeks,” said Michael.

“I don’t think Stephen would have agreed to that unless he was interested in returning to play for his country.

“He could not take his eyes off the game on Saturday night. He did not say too much but I could tell he was into it,” Michael added.

Trapattoni also revealed that he has spoken to Ireland’s club manager Mark Hughes about his midfield star returning to the fold.

“Mark Hughes said that it was up to Ireland,” said the Italian.
