O’Reilly pulls out of economic forum
13 September 2009

Independent News & Media chairman Tony O’Reilly has bowed out of the first Global Irish Economic Forum, although rival businessman Denis O’Brien will join 180 business leaders at the two day event next weekend, writes Niamh Connolly.

O’Reilly is understood to have cited a clash of diary appointments, even though he featured in the initial list of guests who had confirmed their attendance.

Film director Neil Jordan has added his name to the list of attendees for the Farmleigh forum, which is gathering leaders from the world of business, sport and culture.

The theme of the forum, to be held on Friday and Saturday, is the development of a strategic relationship with global leaders who have an Irish connection, in order to support the country’s economic recovery.

An opening address by Taoiseach Brian Cowen will be streamed live on www.globalirishforum.ie with an address on the so-called ‘smart economy’.

A panel discussion on positioning Ireland for the upturn will follow the Taoiseach’s address. A reception for the participants will be hosted by President Mary McAleese at Aras an Uachtaráin, and a dinner at Dublin Castle will be hosted by the Tánaiste, Mary Coughlan. The participants will also attend the all-Ireland football final in Croke Park on Sunday.

The Department of Foreign Affairs is drawing up plans to make the international forum abi-annual event if next weekend’s event is a success.
